If only the coming techno-dystopia would be as cool as the one portrayed in William Gibson’s novels. The man almost single-handedly invented the “Cyberpunk” genre of Science Fiction, and an aesthetic that continues to impact pop culture and self styled techno-rebels of all kinds. His books present a frontier-like world run by corporate fiefdoms and their heavy firepower mercenaries; supported by an underbelly of black and grey markets specializing in industrial espionage to body and brain modifications. Gibson’s highly descriptive writing style ensures you know everyone looks great while trying to survive the gangster futurism and myriad existential crisis.
Sometimes when I’m having a hard time naming a sufficiently dark and electronic track, I’ll turn to a WG book and find the name of an awesomely evil corporation as in the following:
I recently had to replace a tact switch on the right board of my MPC 1000. I initially thought it was the plastic button itself (“right” cursor button), as they are notorious for breaking, but soon discovered it was the actual switch on the board. After doing some research (special thanks goes out to www.mpc-forums.com) I found that these are generic 5mm tact switches used in many electronics, DO NOT waste money buying them from MPC parts distributors; they should cost you under 25 cents each! But be careful that the switches you get have LONG ENOUGH CONNECTORS. My switches had super short ones that did not reach through the other side and would not connect to the solder. Frustrated, and in need of getting back to work on several projects, I removed a switch from the board that is not essential to me for the meantime and replaced the right cursor switch. Houston, all systems back on line!
